Yesterday’s exclusive premiere of reality TV show Mommy Club Nairobi proved that when Kenyan moms get together, real magic happens. And based on what we witnessed, viewers are in for one wild ride.
Meet the Moms
The reality series brings together mothers navigating the beautiful chaos of parenthood in Nairobi. Jackie Matubia is an actress and content creator who’s built her career in Kenya’s entertainment industry. As a mother of two girls, Jackie has always been selective about what she shares publicly. “I’m inviting you to spaces I don’t post on social media,” she said when asked about her decision to join the show.
Lynne Njihia brings perhaps the most emotional storyline to the series. She is the mother of an 18-month-old daughter with renowned Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi. Lynne was emotional during the first episode as she opened up about her pregnancy challenges, revealing she got pregnant just two months after experiencing a miscarriage. Though she and Eric are no longer together, they were still a couple during filming.
DJ Pierra Makena, ranked among the top 100 female DJs globally and sitting comfortably in Africa’s top 10, has been spinning decks and breaking barriers for years. But it’s her role as a single mother to her 8-year-old daughter that takes centre stage here. “Being given an opportunity to show moms how I do it as a single mom is so fulfilling,” she shared.
Carey Priscilla is an entrepreneur and influencer juggling life with three children. Her journey through motherhood and her approach to sharing both the highs and lows has earned her a devoted following.
Last but not least is Ofentse Tsipa, who relocated from South Africa and is navigating motherhood to two children while building her life in a foreign country. Her perspective adds international flavour to the Kenyan experience.
The other stars of the show
What becomes immediately clear is that this isn’t just about the mothers. Their children and support systems play starring roles too. The relationship between these women and their nannies is particularly heart-warming as they are important parts of their families.
Pierra’s daughter Ricca is already proving to be a star in her own right. During the premiere episode, when Pierra expresses concern about Ricca going swimming while she’s out of the country for work, young Ricca delivers the episode’s best one-liner: it’s because mom doesn’t know how to swim herself. The audience laughed and it was clear that she is a real scene-stealer.
Friendships and Feuds
The show explores modern motherhood through various lenses. Themes of co-parenting, single motherhood and families where both parents are present are strong throughout the show.
There’s history between some cast members too. Lynne and Carey’s friendship dates back to the COVID days, and their reunion on screen feels authentic and warm.
But this is reality television, after all. The first episode ends with a hint of drama that had premiere attendees speculating about what’s to come next. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say these women aren’t afraid of difficult conversations.
A New Chapter for Kenyan Reality TV
What struck me most about yesterday’s premiere wasn’t just the polished production or the star power of the cast. It was the genuine relatability of their stories. These aren’t perfect Instagram moments but are real women dealing with real challenges while trying to raise the next generation.
Mommy Club Nairobi officially launched this morning at 6 AM and if the premiere is any indication, Kenyan audiences are about to get an unfiltered look at motherhood that’s both entertaining and deeply human.
