Senate to hold special sitting in honour of Raila

The Senators will thereafter adjourn until Tuesday, 28th October 2025, at 2:30 p.m.

The Senate is set to hold a special sitting in honour of ODM party leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday while receiving treatment in India.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced that the MPs will convene on Thursday, October 16, at 2:30 p.m. in the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings.

According to a gazette notice, Senators will be expected to pay tribute to Raila during the session.

“Notice is given to all Senators that pursuant to Standing Order 33 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader and with the support of the requisite number of Senators, I have appointed Thursday, 16th October, 2025 as a day for a special sitting of the Senate”, said the Speaker.

“ The special sitting shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 2.30 p.m. until conclusion of the business of the day. The business to be transacted at the sitting shall be consideration of a Motion for the Senate to pay tribute and eulogise the former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya, the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, E.G.H”, he notice reads.

Thereafter, the senators will adjourn for 12 days.

“In accordance with Standing Order 33 (5) of the Senate Standing Orders, the business specified in this notice shall be the only business before the Senate during the special sitting, following which the Senate shall stand adjourned until Tuesday, 28th October, 2025 at 2.30 p.m., in accordance with the Senate Calendar”, the notice states.

At the same time, the Speaker mourned Odinga, revered by many as “Baba,” as a true son of the soil, a patriot, Pan Africanist, and a fearless defender of democracy and the rule of law, saying his death was a source of deep shock and grief for the nation.

He further acknowledged Odinga’s monumental political influence, stating that he was a political giant who mentored many.

“I was privileged to have passed through the Raila Odinga Academy of Politics”. He said.
