Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has been suspended following a High Court ruling in January that upheld the Senate Powers and Privileges Committee’s decision.

Orwoba was suspended for six months for gross misconduct by the Senate in September 2023, after the House adopted the recommendation of the Committee, chaired by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, following a majority vote.

The suspension stemmed from unsubstantiated allegations she made regarding sexual favours involving some parliamentary officials.

She faced a setback last month when the court dismissed her application challenging the decision. As a result, Orwoba is set to lose substantial perks for the next 79 days while she remains out of Parliament.

Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi (Meru) Wednesday issued a Communication on the Implementation of the Resolution of the Senate on the Report of the Committee of Powers and Privileges on the Conduct of the Senator.

“You will recall that by a resolution of the Senate dated 20th September 2023, Sen. Gloria Orwoba was suspended from the house for the remainder of the second session of the 13th Parliament. However, Senator Orwoba secured a court order staying the resolution of this House” Muringi said.

“The consequences of the stay of suspension by the High Court is that Sen. Orwoba did not serve any of her suspension as resolved by the Senate…..Having considered this matter and taking note of the judgement delivered by the High Court, Sen. Gloria Orwoba shall now forthwith commence her suspension” he told the house.

The Senator apologised on the floor of the House, stating that it was not her intention to offend members and staff.

“I offer my apologies to the Members of this House and the Members of Staff who I offended. It was not my intention make it seem like I’m trying to ridicule this Upper House” she said.
