The government has apprehended suspects in the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were and launched a crackdown on the collaborators, Interior and National Administration CS Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed.
The CS disclosed that the perpetrators of the heinous act are now in the police radar and that top security chiefs will soon update the nation.
“It is shocking to know the gruesome manner in which this heinous crime was committed,” said the CS.
He said: “The government guarantees the safety of all Kenyans. Those perpetrators and collaborators will all be apprehended and will be severely punished to deter those with similar intentions from future crimes.”
He lauded the swift action by the security agencies in apprehending the culprits, saying it demonstrated the advanced level of intelligence, technology, and public collaboration.
He said with improved security systems, technology, and evidence analysis, the officers have quickly narrowed down on the suspects who are helping with the probe to get the masterminds.
“These people were quickly picked and it sends a signal to anybody planning or intending to harm any Kenyan,” stated the CS, cautioning any Kenyan imagining they can get away with crime.
He stressed, “We are committed to ensuring Kenyans are safe. Our focus is not on a certain class of citizens but everyone.”
The CS noted that the slain MP was gunned down under the protection of his bodyguard, which he termed unfortunate.
On the Migori incident, where a shoe was hurled at President William Ruto, the CS said the matter is under investigation.
“The matter is under investigation to establish whether there was a lapse in the part of the President’s security and whether there was a motive to harm the President,” said CS Murkomen.
He said the security of the Head of State cannot be taken for granted because the consequences are dire.
“We must at all times ensure the President is not harmed in any way. We cannot rule out that there are evil people in society who would want to harm others, VIPs included.”
The CS spoke when fielding questions from journalists at the Meru County Commissioner’s headquarters after a security meeting with Regional and County security chiefs.
The team apprised CS Murkomen on the state of security in Upper Eastern, at the start of the Jukwaa la Usalama tour of the region.
During the tour he assessed the security situation in the county with a particular focus on the banditry and cattle rustling challenge in the northern part of the county.
The CS in his X handle said he also deliberated on other security concerns including boundary disputes between the county and its neighbors, drug and substance abuse, illicit brews and the proliferation of second-generation alcohol.
“We will seek convergence on strategies to combat these challenges in our Jukwaa la Usalama discussions that are underway at the Kinoru Stadium.” He noted.
