Two suspects were arrested in Meru county on Wednesday evening in connection with a robbery incident that occurred at Mungania Shopping Center.
The arrest follows a swift multi-agency police response that led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and an abandoned vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects.
According to the report made by the National Police Service, at around 2030 hours, a National Police Reservist(NPR) on duty in the area heard gunshots and immediately responded.
The reservist spotted an armed individual carrying an AK-47 rifle. Upon being challenged, the suspect dropped the firearm and fled on foot.
Officers from Kathare, Subuinga and Buuri East Police Stations responded swiftly to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered an abandoned motor vehicle at the center of the incident.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of personal items, including two mobile phones and a female suspect who was immediately arrested.
A second suspect was arrested shortly while attempting to hide in a nearby residence. Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals were involved in a robbery that targeted a local shop where the shop attendant sustained minor injuries during the incident.
Both suspects are currently in police custody, awaiting arraignment in court.
The recovered firearm and the abandoned vehicle have been secured for further forensic analysis and investigations to determine the full extent of the suspect activities and whether they are linked to other crimes in the region.
