South African musician Tyla has won a Video Music Award for her single “Push To Start” released in 2024.
She was the only African to win an award at the event despite African artists like Burna Boy and Ayra Starr being nominated in other categories. The two were nominees in Video for Good and MTV Push Performance of the Year, respectively.
Meanwhile, Lady Gaga led the field with 12 nominations, and she came away the night’s biggest winner, taking home four Moon Person trophies.
She did not, however, win Video of the Year, which went to Ariana Grande, for “Brighter Days Ahead.”
Grande won two other awards, and Sabrina Carpenter also took home three trophies.
