Over 150 young people in Kisii County have graduated from a four-week digital skills training programme under the Huawei DigiTruck initiative, a mobile, solar-powered classroom designed to provide tech education to underserved communities.
The training encompassed essential digital competencies, including basic computer use, internet navigation, digital marketing, cybersecurity awareness, and digital entrepreneurship. The initiative aims to close the digital literacy gap between rural and urban areas, equipping youth for the future workforce.
“The digital skills these young people have acquired—like online safety and digital marketing—are not just tools for employment; they are gateways to global opportunities and financial independence.” stated Nominated MP Hon. Irene Mayaka during the graduation ceremony.
She added, “Huawei’s DigiTruck program is an investment in our future. It empowers youth with knowledge that no one can take away and reinforces Kisii’s spirit of entrepreneurship and excellence.”

According to the World Bank’s 2023 report, only 38% of rural youth in Kenya possess basic ICT skills, compared to 67% in urban areas. Furthermore, over 60% of jobs in Kenya by 2030 will require advanced digital and cognitive skills, underscoring the urgent need for such initiatives.
Huawei’s DigiTruck programme addresses this challenge directly by bringing digital learning opportunities to remote communities. In Kisii, the initiative also featured a DigiTruck Innovation Competition, where trainees presented tech-based solutions to local challenges. Winners received tablets and mentorship to further develop their ideas.
Cabinet Secretary for Education Hon. Julius Migos Ogamba praised the programme, stating, “The success of the DigiTruck in Kisii is a powerful example of what public-private partnerships can achieve when aligned with community needs. I commend Huawei and partners like Computers for Schools Kenya for championing digital inclusion.”
Huawei Kenya Public Affairs Director Mr. Yuta Leng congratulated the graduates and reiterated the company’s long-term commitment to digital empowerment:
“These young people have shown that with the right tools and training, they can be powerful innovators and change-makers. Huawei remains committed to expanding digital inclusion and supporting the next generation of Kenyan leaders.” He said

The DigiTruck is part of Huawei’s global Tech4All initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, the Ministry of Education, the ICT Authority, Computers for Schools Kenya (CFSK), and other stakeholders. It aligns with the government’s Digital Superhighway and Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) by enhancing inclusive digital access and skills development.
The Kisii graduation follows recent DigiTruck programmes in Baringo, Migori, and Homa Bay Counties, bringing the total number of youth trained in 2025 to over 900. Notable graduations this year include:
- Baringo County: 180 graduates from Kabimoi Vocational Training Centre
- Migori County: 210 graduates (95 women, 115 men) from Uriri VTC
- Homa Bay County: 290 graduates (143 women, 147 men) from Oriwo Boys High School
Since its launch in 2019, the Huawei DigiTruck has reached over 9,000 youth across 39 counties, delivering life-changing skills and bridging the digital divide one county at a time.
