The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) have renewed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in a bid to enhance police accountability and protect human rights.
In a meeting held on Monday in the North Eastern region, Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (SADPP) Bonny Okemwa hosted a delegation of IPOA officials led by Commissioner Dr. Micah Onyiego and Regional Head Tim Nzomu to discuss ways of deepening collaboration between the two agencies.
Okemwa underscored the importance of coordinated investigations, stressing that law enforcement officers must respect human rights while executing their duties.
Both parties resolved to reinforce the existing partnership through regular joint trainings to enhance the capacity of prosecutors and investigators handling police-related cases.
They also explored alternative justice approaches such as diversion and plea bargaining, particularly for select cases.
The collaboration between the two agencies has already yielded significant results, including more than 50 convictions in cases of unlawful killings and serious violations by police officers.
The ODPP, which independently reviews IPOA investigation files to determine the viability of prosecutions, reaffirmed its role in upholding accountability within the criminal justice system.
