The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) of Kenya and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) of the Republic of Korea have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Technical Cooperation in Nuclear Energy Research and Development.

The signing ceremony took place in Vienna, Austria, on the sidelines of the 69th IAEA General Conference. The agreement was signed by NuPEA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Justus Wabuyabo and KAERI President Dr. Han Gyu Joo, in the presence of Kenya’s delegation head, Prof. Abdulrazak Shaukat, Principal Secretary, State Department for Science, Research, and Innovation.

The MoU marks a major milestone in Kenya’s nuclear ambitions, supporting the implementation of the Kenya Nuclear Research Reactor (KNRR) project. The reactor will enhance national capacity for nuclear research and development and advance Kenya’s nuclear power programme, contributing to health, energy, agriculture, industry, and research applications.

The agreement builds on prior collaboration between NuPEA and KAERI, including the successful completion of the KNRR Feasibility Study. NuPEA has already carried out extensive planning, stakeholder assessments, economic analysis, and site investigations. This new cooperation will further advance Kenya’s nuclear research and energy capabilities, reinforcing the country’s long-term energy security, scientific progress, and industrial growth.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to advancing nuclear science and technology for sustainable socio-economic development, guided by principles of transparency, responsibility, and mutual benefit.
