The public viewing of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has been moved from the Parliament Buildings to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to allow more Kenyans to pay their last respects.

The last-minute change was announced by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), citing overwhelming crowds and the need for a larger venue.

“Due to the surge in the number of mourners, the viewing of the body of HE Raila Amolo Odinga has been moved from the Parliament Buildings to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani,” the statement by ODM read in part.

“Members of the public are advised to proceed to Kasarani, where there shall be enough space and time to view the body.” It added.

Initially, the body was to be taken from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Lee Funeral Home and then to Parliament for public viewing, but the plan was revised after thousands of mourners thronged the city, creating traffic gridlocks and security concerns.

Military and mortuary teams stationed at Lee Funeral Home have been redirected to Kasarani, where final preparations are underway to accommodate the large numbers expected. More changes to the funeral programme are expected throughout the day as the situation continues to be closely monitored.

The programme is already behind schedule due to disruptions caused by uncontrollable crowds.

Security agencies have also warned of expected traffic congestion along Thika Road and adjoining routes leading to Kasarani Stadium.
