A day after a moving national memorial service in Nairobi that was attended by President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and DP Kithure Kindiki, Raila Odinga’s body arrived in Kisumu to a hero’s welcome.
Thousands of his supporters lined the streets, waving flags, leaves and chanting songs after a night of candlelight vigil to celebrate his life of service and to welcome him home.
Flanked by heavy security and armed guards, the procession made its way from the airport to the Mamboleo Stadium where mourners gathered to pay their last respects.
Kisumu has long been considered the heart of his political base.
While the proceedings continue without incident, emergency services are on hand to help mourners overwhelmed by emotion.
Raila Odinga died on Wednesday in India at the age of 80. His remains will be transported to his home in Bondo after the public viewing ceremony taking place at the Mamboleo Stadium on Saturday.
