BasiGo, a leading provider of electric bus solutions, today announced the official opening of its newest electric vehicle (EV) charging site at Shell Athi River service station. This marks BasiGo’s third Shell service station -hosted charging location in Kenya, following the successful launch of sites at Shell Waiyaki Way and Shell New Gatitu service stations in Thika.
The Athi River station is a strategic investment in Kenya’s sustainable transport infrastructure. Designed to support the rapid growth of electric public transport and commercial fleets, the site can charge four vehicles simultaneously, featuring one CCS2 fast charger (two guns) and one GBT charger (two guns). This setup ensures efficient charging for a variety of EV models, minimizing downtime for operators. The station will serve vehicles operating along the Kitengela route, including Rembo Classic and Enabled Mashariki Sacco.
Speaking during the launch, Moses Nderitu, Managing Director Kenya, highlighted the milestone as a sign of Kenya’s accelerating shift toward sustainable transport. He says every new charging site is a critical step toward a cleaner, more sustainable transport system for Kenya.
“Access to reliable charging remains the biggest barrier to the adoption of e-mobility, and partnerships like these are helping us overcome it. This is our third site with Shell, and it demonstrates that the model works and can scale. What’s especially important is that this station is expanding electric mobility beyond Nairobi’s city limits. Located on a key corridor linking Nairobi to Machakos and the greater Eastern region, it gives operators the confidence to go electric. They can now see the infrastructure taking shape: rapid charging, reliable access, and locations directly along their route,” he noted
According to the Nderitu, when operators know they can charge efficiently without disrupting schedules, the shift to electric becomes a straightforward business decision.

The Athi River station is part of BasiGo’s broader infrastructure expansion across Nairobi and its metropolitan region, strengthening the charging backbone needed to support Kenya’s rapidly growing fleet of electric buses and commercial EVs. With this expansion, BasiGo continues to operate the country’s most extensive network of DC fast chargers for electric buses and maintains the largest fleet of electric buses currently in service in East Africa.
