The Ministry of Education has maintained that the ongoing strike by members of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) is illegal.
Speaking during the official launch of the Universities Fund Digital Portal in Nairobi on Tuesday, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, said a technical team has been formed to determine the exact amount of money owed to the striking lecturers
“There is a court process underway, and we expect all parties to respect it,” Dr. Muganda said. “The lecturers should be in class teaching. They need to know that that strike is illegal.”
The Universities Fund Digital Portal, launched during the event, aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in the allocation and disbursement of government funds to universities.
Meanwhile, the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) has condemned a Ministry of Education directive to form a technical team to determine the exact amount of money owed to the striking lecturers under the 2017-2021 collective bargaining agreement.
UASU officials maintained that the amount in contention is Ksh 7.9 billion, which they asserted the government must own up and pay.
They have said that without these terms being met, the strike that has clocked a month remains on.
