Debutants Nairobi United FC progressed to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage on Sunday night after dumping out tournament regulars Etoile Du Sahel of Tunisia 7-6 on post-match penalties following a 2-2 aggregate in the return leg of the 2nd preliminary stage .
Sahel, who had lost 2-0 in the 1st leg in Nairobi a week ago, overturned the scoreline by beating the Nairobi County, sponsored club by a similar margin, to send the match into penalties.
Shot stopper Kevin Oduor was the hero of the match after he saved two spot kicks from the home side before converting his side’s 7th penalty to send them into frenzied celebrations of a milestone achievement.
The Mozzart Bet Cup defending champions under the tutelage of former international Nicholas Muyoti beat all the odds to become the 1st Kenyan side to reach the group stage of the tournament since Gor Mahia in the 2018/2019 season.
Under the patronage of Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja, the club stands to reap big, as they will pocket Ksh 51.6 million should they finish 3rd or 4th in their group and Ksh 71 million should they make it to the quarter-finals.
The club will get an additional KSh 6.4 million allocated for each team that played in the preliminary stage of the tournament from CAF to foot travelling expenses.
