Gen Z Boyd Were declared winner of Kasipul Constituency by-election

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Boyd Were has been declared the winner of Kasipul Constituency Member of Parliament in a by-election after securing 16,819 votes.

Were who is the son of the late former MP Were Ong’ondo beat his closest rival Philip Nashon Aroko who ran on an independent ticket and garnered 8,476 votes.

Were, 27, was declared MP-elect in the hotly contested race which attracted ten candidates.

“IEBC conducted a free, fair and transparent election,” said elated Were after being pronounced the winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) returning officer at Agoro Sare High School tallying centre on Friday morning.

“The people of Kasipul have elected a good leader. So its for me to work for them diligently. Personally, I’m fit to be the member of parliament,” he added.

During the Thursday polls, tense situation in some parts of the constituency threatened to disrupt the elective process forcing the law enforcement agents to beef up security at various polling stations.

According to Lead Observer from Pimac International Pius Masai Mwachi, the exercise was conducted in free and fair manners despite the reported incidences.

Observers noted the chaos after goons tried to obstruct the process.

“We can say that election was fair. However we saw some challenges in terms of some people who tried to disrupt the election but the swift action by the security apparatus made the operation smooth,” said Mwachi.

According to the official results 31,323 people showed up to voted in the Kasipul Constituency by-election out of the total 67,513 registered voters as per the 2022 register. This translates to a voter turnout of 40.396pc.

Independent candidate Omondi Collins Okeyo came a distant third with 4,796 votes, followed by Robert Money Bior, also an independent candidate who garnered 519 votes.

Others are Isaac Kiche Abok (KMM) with 201 votes, Ishmael Omondi Oyoo (NLP) 96, Sam Rateng Okoth (UPA) 72, Jesse Samson Owen Okello (DNA) 55, Jeazmen Linda Ouma (Independent) 26 and Robert Ouko Ouma of LPK with 17 votes.
