Golden girls Kipyegon and Chebet return to action in 5000m in Tokyo

Newly crowned World Champions Beatrice Chebet (10,000M) and Faith Kipyegon(1500m) will return to action today in the 1st round of the 5000m on day 6 of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Double Olympic Champion Chebet, will compete in the first heat of the 12.5-lap race from 1:05pm alongside her compatriot Margaret Akidor, who will be making her debut at the global championships.

Kipyegon, who bagged her 4th world title over 1500m, will start her 5000m title defense in heat 2, alongside 10km world record holder Agnes Jebet Ngétich, who finished 4th in the 10,000m final last Saturday.

The triple Olympic champion in 1500m won the 5000m gold during the 2023 Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Former World Champion Julius Yego will also be competing in the men’s javelin final starting at 1:23pm, followed by the 800m women’s heats, as Mary Moraa will start her title defense in heat 2.

World under-20champion Sarah Moraa ,national champions Lillian Odira and Vivian Chebet will compete in heats 4, 5 and 7, respectively, in the two-lap race.

Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi will be in action in the 800m semi-final alongside other Kenyans Kelvin Kimtai and Nicholas Kebenei in the last action of day six involving Kenyans.

Kenya is 2nd in the medal table with 7 medals (4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze), behind the USA, who leads with 7 medals (4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze).

The 20th edition of the Championships, which has brought together over 2000 athletes from 200 countries, will end this Sunday, 21st September.
