American actress Cynthia Erivo made history on Monday when she received her second Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Elphaba in John Chu’s “Wicked: For Good.”
Erivo is nominated in the Lead Actress category (Musical or Comedy), a category she also received a nomination for in last year’s nominations for her role in the first movie, “Wicked.” She becomes the first, because it is a feat no other black woman has achieved since the Golden Globes’ founding in 1943.
Only 12 black actresses have been nominated in the Lead Actress (Musical or Comedy) category since the awards’ inception.
Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler’s horror film, “Sinners”, lauded for its originality, has received 7 Golden Globe nominations, including Michael B Jordan’s first nomination in the Best Male Actor category. Jordan essentially plays two roles in the film, the twins Smoke and Stack, collectively dubbed the smokestack twins.
“Sinners” comes in third after Norway’s “Sentimental Value” with 8 nods, while Leonardo DiCaprio’s led film, “One Battle After Another” leads with 9 nominations.
