Four Kenyan are among the 73 referees selected the 35th edition of the African Cup of Nations set for Morocco between the 21st of next month and the 18th of January next year.
Professor of Pure Mathematics at the Jomo Kenyatta University Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT), Peter Kamaku Waweru is the only selected centre referee from Kenya in the CAF’s list of 28 who will be in charge of 52 matches in the tournament.
43 Year-old Kamaku will be officiating at the biennial tournament for a 4th edition in a row since his first appointment 2019 in Egypt.
Other Kenyans Stephen Yiembe Onyango and Gilbert Cheruiyot will be returning to 2nd AFCON in a row as the assistant referees after the duo were picked for the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast.
Cheruiyot, who made his debut as the AFCON assistant referee in 2019, will also make his 4th appearance, while Yiembe will be on his 2nd assignment.
Interestingly, Dickens Mimisa from Kenya has been appointed as part of the team of 14 video assistant referees, making his debut for AFCON in that crucial role.
