Kenya’s Special Operations Group (SOG) has foiled an attempted attack by suspected Al-Shabaab terrorists in the Welmerer–Yumbia area of Garissa County.
According to the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the militants were attempting to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) when the elite security unit, acting on a tip-off, intercepted and thwarted their plan.
“ Our Elite Special Operations Group (SOG) stopped eight Alshabaab terrorists who were attempting to set up Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDS) at the Welmerer-Yumbia area in Garissa. The SOG swiftly responded to information reported by the local community that eight terrorists had been spotted attempting to set up IEDS”, the multi-agency unit said.
The officers recovered the assembled IEDs. “The Brave officers engaged the terrorists and managed to recover assembled IEDS, which were to be used to attack our mothers, children, and security officers using Welmerer-Yumbis road”, it said.
NCTC, which urged the public to remain vigilant, commended residents for promptly reporting the suspicious activity that led to the swift action.
“The SOG appreciates the cooperation of the local community and other stakeholders and urges enhanced vigilance to stop any terror plots”.
