Kenya Railways Corporation has announced the completion of the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service project which is expected to ease movement of travelers within Mombasa County.
According to Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar, Mert Gauge Railway project is designed to provide a convenient last-mile connection for passengers using the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, as well as serve local commuters traveling along the corridor.
“I am pleased to inform that the project is now complete and ready for operations. Our goal is to reduce commuting time, ease road congestion, cut carbon emissions, and provide safe, reliable, and affordable transport for all,” said Daghar.
The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service project entailed construction of passenger stations in Mombasa town and Miritini, construction of a 2.3km Railway Bridge across the ocean at Makupa, and revitalization of 16.6km of existing Metre Gauge Railway line.
Following the completion of rail link, KRC is now targeting to construct two additional stations in Changamwe West and Changamwe East constituencies.
“The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service Link train schedule has been carefully aligned with the Madaraka Express Passenger Service train schedule to ensure that every time the Madaraka Express Passenger Service train arrives, the Link train will be on standby to offer the last mile connectivity into Mombasa town. This same Link train will have brought passengers who will travel aboard the Madaraka Express Passenger Service train,” added Abdi Bare, Kenya Railways Chairman.
Already, KRC has successfully conducted test rides to check for safety and suitability of the line for passenger operations.
The corporation said the service includes “Park and Ride” and “Drop and Ride” options, with parking space for over 100 cars, and is expected to serve over 1,000 commuters daily.
