President William Ruto has said it is fitting for the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga to lie in state at the Parliament Buildings. He described him as a patriot, statesman, and reformist who dedicated his life to Kenya’s democracy and progress.
Speaking during the solemn ceremony in Nairobi on Thursday, President Ruto highlighted Raila’s significant contributions to the people of Kenya, particularly during his fifteen years as the Member of Parliament for Kibera and later as Prime Minister, which left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
“For fifteen years, our departed leader served the people of Kibera with unwavering dedication and distinction,” President Ruto stated
“He was a tireless champion of justice, democracy, and progress, playing a pivotal role in shaping some of the most consequential laws in our Republic’s history, including the passage of the 2010 Constitution,” Ruto explained
The President noted that Parliament is one of the most appropriate places for Kenyans and the three branches of government to pay their final respects.
“It is most fitting that he lies in state at the August House, granting the Executive, Parliament, and the Judiciary, as well as the nation at large, a solemn moment to honour with reverence and gratitude the life and legacy of a true patriot and statesman,” he said.
Following the lying-in-state at Parliament, Raila’s remains were taken to Nyayo Stadium for a state funeral in his honour.
Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday in India while receiving treatment, was 80 years old. His death has prompted tributes from across Kenya and around the world, with leaders recognizing him as a towering figure in the struggle for democracy and good governance.
