The Government has confirmed that this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will proceed as scheduled tomorrow (Monday) even as the nation continues to mourn the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura in a statement said the celebrations, marked every year will take place at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui, in accordance with the Public Holidays Act and Article 9(3) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010).
“The Government affirms with unwavering resolve that Mashujaa Day, our sacred celebration of Kenya’s heroes, a constitutionally enshrined public holiday under the Public Holidays Act and aligned with Article 9(3) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010), will proceed as planned,” said Mwaura.
Despite the cancellation of several national government events have been respectfully postponed to allow space for reflection and mourning as directed by President William Ruto, he said the core celebrations will unfold in full honor of our heroes, past and present.
He called on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers to celebrate the country’s heroes and to honor the memory of Raila Odinga through unity and resilience.
This comes amidst the presidential proclamation of a seven-day mourning period for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is set to be laid to rest today. Mwala MP, Vincent Kawaya, flagged by pro-government MPs, Permanent Secretaries, and other government-appointed officials from Ukambani, addressed detractors and propagandists, affirming that the event will proceed as planned.
