Security authorities in Naivasha have raised concerns over the rising involvement of students in the sale and use of bhang around the lakeside town.
This follows the recent seizure of a haul of bhang from Kabati estate, where two suspects, reportedly brothers, managed to evade police. In the past two months, authorities have arrested four individuals linked to the illegal trade, recovering bhang worth over Sh2 million, primarily in the town’s informal settlements.
Naivasha Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Josiah Odongo reported that some students were dropping out of school to join the drug trade, a trend he described as alarming.
During the recent operation, police recovered two motorcycles, TV sets, and hundreds of rolls of bhang. The DCC vowed to take swift action against those aiding the trade.
“One of the suspects we are pursuing has an ongoing criminal case, and it’s only a matter of time before we catch up with him,” said Odongo.
He also noted that the crackdown on illicit brews was ongoing, with police seizing thousands of litres of ethanol and charging numerous suspects before the Naivasha law courts.
The renewed efforts against the illegal drug trade aim to dismantle the networks used by cartels, which have long put the lives of unsuspecting users at risk.
