Police have been forced to lob teargas at surging crowds that packed Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, a 60,000-seater stadium, as thousands turned up to pay their last respects to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Security teams struggled to restore order after the crowds overwhelmed the stadium, occupying the pitch, terraces, and even the VIP section.

The stand-off disrupted logistical arrangements that had been hastily put in place following a last-minute change of venue.

There was a near stampede as panicked mourners scrambled for cover while trying to exit the venue amid the chaos.

The stadium has since been cleared, and security forces have taken control, with hopes that the public viewing will proceed as planned.

According to the earlier programme, the public viewing was scheduled to conclude at 5 p.m., after which the remains would be taken to Lee Funeral Home.

A sea of humanity is waiting outside the stadium.
