Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the opening ceremony of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women and deliver a keynote address, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The meeting, co-hosted by China and UN Women, is scheduled to take place in Beijing from 13 to 14 October.

This year marks both the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, organized by the UN and held in Beijing in 1995, as stated by spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press briefing.

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted at that conference 30 years ago, represents a significant milestone in the global advancement of women’s rights, Guo noted.

In 2020, President Xi participated via video link in the High-Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, during which he proposed another Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in 2025.

To realize this pivotal proposal, Guo explained that this week’s meeting aims to unite participants in renewing the spirit of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and provide new momentum for promoting global gender equality and the comprehensive development of women. The meeting also seeks to collaboratively build a community with a shared future for humanity.

Dozens of heads of state and government, parliamentary leaders, deputy prime ministers, ministerial-level officials, heads of international organisations, and global partners are anticipated to attend.

“We look forward to working with the international community to make this meeting a great success and set it up as another milestone in the history of the development of women’s cause globally,” Guo stated.
