Raila Odinga Junior, the youngest son of the late former Kenyan Prime Minister, who passed away a week ago, has officially assumed leadership of the Odinga family.
During the coronation ceremony, held four days after his father’s state burial, Junior underwent the symbolic shaving of his head, marking the end of the four-day mourning period traditionally observed by adult Luo men.

The ceremony culminated in the performance of Tero Buru, a cleansing and send-off rite that ensures the spirit of the deceased rests in peace.
Following this, visitors and family members are allowed to leave the homestead and may now participate in other activities, including the official “release” of the widow.
Great legacy
The first cut is traditionally made by the grandmother before anyone else can proceed to shave the entire head.
Ideally, the spouse, Mama Ida, is also supposed to undergo the shaving ritual. However, according to the late ODM leader’s brother, Senator Oburu Odinga, with civilisation, she cannot.
“Installation of Raila Odinga Junior as the Head of Raila Odinga Family marks a significant moment in the continuation of a great legacy”, said Siaya Governor James Orengo and close friend of the family.
Junior said he was ready for the task.
The family has been receiving delegations drawn from across the country for prayers at Raila’s grave site at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, in Bondo, Siaya county.
