The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) has intensified efforts to expand electricity access in Kuresoi North, Nakuru County, through the last mile connectivity programme that will benefit 3,500 households.
The initiative was flagged off on Monday by President William Ruto, shortly after he launched the Mau Forest Complex Integrated Conservation and Livelihood Improvement Programme.
The electrification project is part of REREC’s nationwide efforts to expand access to power, which now reaches more than 75 per cent of Kenyan households, a sharp rise from just 4 per cent in 2008.
In Nakuru County, the government through REREC has invested Ksh2.6 billion to connect 22,568 households to electricity, with Ksh145 million allocated to Kuresoi North alone.

Apart from Exchequer funding, the Corporation also implements the Matching Fund Programme, a cost-sharing initiative that brings together counties, constituencies, and other partners to accelerate rural connectivity.
The financing model has enabled the corporation to mobilise about Ksh4 billion from stakeholders and implement roughly 1,400 projects nationwide.
In the 2024/2025 financial year alone, REREC has raised Ksh773 million under the matching fund to facilitate 183 projects across various counties.
Between 2021/2022 and 2023/2024 financial years, Naivasha and Kuresoi North constituencies jointly contributed Ksh50 million through the programme, attracting an additional Ksh20 million from REREC.
The combined effort saw the rollout of 18 new electrification projects at a cost of Ksh35 million.
