President William Ruto says Kenya is seeking to deepen trade ties with the European Union as it looks to unlock greater benefits from the EU-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) that took effect in July 2024.

Ruto noted that the European Union remains Kenya’s largest export market, citing a long-standing partnership that has expanded steadily over the years.

In a statement on X after holding a meeting with EU Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger, the president said the government is holding continuous consultations with EU counterparts to maximise opportunities under EPA.

“Through constant consultations, we are exploring ways of maximising the opportunities under the EU-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which entered into force in July 2024, to secure duty-free, quota-free access for Kenyan products in the EU market,” said Ruto.

The head of state noted that the government is keen on widening global markets for Kenyan farmers, entrepreneurs and industries to increase earnings, create jobs and deliver measurable economic and social benefits to Kenyans.

Kenya became the first East African Community state to implement the EPA with the EU, a move the government says positions local producers to compete more effectively in the European market.
