Ruto says AU reforms key to addressing Africa’s challenges

President William Ruto says the African Union reform process remains a critical and timely undertaking, driven by evolving continental and global realities.

Ruto, who chaired the Third (Virtual) Session of the Ad Hoc Oversight Committee of Heads of State and Government on African Union Institutional Reform as Champion for AU Institutional Reform said the reforms are essential to ensure the Union can respond effectively to peace, development, and integration challenges.

He noted that the agenda is shaped by rising expectations from African citizens and aims to strengthen coherence, efficiency, and accountability across AU institutions while remaining responsive to the needs of member states.

“This reform agenda is essential to ensuring that the African Union remains fit for purpose, responsive to the needs and aspirations of Member States and the African people while strengthening coherence, efficiency, and accountability across its institutions,” he said.

The session brought together Presidents John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, and Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, alongside AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, AU High Representative for Financing Donald Kaberuka, and senior representatives from Angola, Tanzania, Tunisia, and Congo, among others.
