Political leaders in Migori County are calling on the government to ensure all outstanding payments owed to region’s sugar sector are settled.
According to the leaders, more than a year since the Sony Sugar Company was placed under receivership, former employees of the Sony Sugar Company, and workers who were laid off after the company was placed under receivership are yet to be paid.
When the company was handed over to the receiver, the government promised that farmers would be paid their outstanding dues, including payments owed to former employees of Sony Sugar and other workers who had lost their jobs after the company was placed under receivership.
Some of these commitments have been fulfilled, while others have not been implemented to date.
Some farmers are still waiting to receive their payments, while former Sony Sugar employees who lost their jobs after the company was placed under receivership are also still waiting for their arrears.
During the period when Sony Sugar’s former employees and farmers were demanding their payments, some elected leaders in Migori County, including Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, Migori Senator Eddy Oketch and Awendo Member of Parliament Walter Owino, came out to urge the government to settle the outstanding dues.
They say they have raised the concerns of farmers and former Sony Sugar employees in Parliament and are hopeful that a response will be forthcoming soon.
Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko says he understands the plight of the former Sony Sugar employees and believes it would be appropriate for the government to pay them as soon as possible.
He says he is also working closely with Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, who has called for former Sony Sugar employees to be reinstated.
