A research is being carried out to establish the volume of underground water in Kenya.
International Water Management representative for East Africa Abdulkarim Seid says unchecked expansion of land under irrigation in arable areas is likely to deplete underground water hence the need for continuous audit of available underground water for sustainability.
Kenya targets to increase the land under irrigation from the current 711,993 acres to 1.3 million acres in next two years.
However, players in water management space say increased drilling of boreholes in arable areas as farmers expand land under irrigation is putting pressure on underground water.
They are also rooting for targeted irrigation methods to reduce water wastage in food production.
The International Water Management Institute and Sun culture are carrying out a research to establish the volume of underground water reserves in a select regions in Kenya.
