Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, widely known as KK Mwenyewe, has died at the age of 23 after a short illness. He passed away on Monday 14th July 2025 while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
KK Mwenyewe rose to national attention in 2022 through his humorous impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. His fearless mimicry and striking physical resemblance to the politician earned him widespread recognition on TikTok and also on Facebook and YouTube, where his short clips about everyday Kenyan life regularly went viral.
His transformation into a satirical voice for the younger generation not only marked him a mere entertainer but also a mirror to Kenyan society.
Tributes have poured in from all corners of the country.
Busia Senator Okiya Omatatah led tributes calling him ‘a cultural commentator’ who used humour to educate and unite.
“Through satire and art, Mr. KK courageously held a mirror to society, using humor not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite,” Mr Omtata said. “His ability to capture the political moment with sharp wit and authenticity was both refreshing and powerful.”
Though the exact cause of his illness remains undisclosed, his family confirmed it progressed rapidly hence leading to his death.
Mr Omtata said his untimely passing had left Kenya’s comedy scene and the broader public in mourning, reflecting on the voice lost, laughter and insight he brought to so many.
“Kenya has lost not just a comedian, but a cultural commentator and a brave young patriot. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire creative community,” he added.
Kiharu Member of Parliament, also shared his tribute online, calling the comedian’s passing “tragic and sudden.”
