Machakos County has taken steps to advance its global investment agenda by engaging with a high-powered delegation from Pujiang County, China.

The county held major discussions this week during the China (Pujiang) – Kenya (Machakos) Economic and Trade Cooperation Promotion Forum, focused on unlocking new opportunities in trade, infrastructure, ICT, innovation, and more.

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti championed her county, presenting the flagship New Machakos City project—spanning 2,200 acres—as a prime destination for investment, featuring dedicated Special Economic Zones (SEZs), light industries, and smart infrastructure.

“We are ready for business. Tell us what you want to do—put it in writing—and we will allocate you land,” the Governor told the visiting delegation. “We are focusing on light industries such as textiles, ICT, and many more. There are endless opportunities here for you, and we will walk with you every step of the way.”

Governor Wavinya’s commitment was echoed by Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, who reassured investors of a secure and enabling business environment.

‎“We invite you to invest in this county. There are numerous opportunities. When you invest in Machakos, you can be assured that your business is protected,” he noted.

The Pujiang delegation, led by County Magistrate Liu Xi and senior trade officials, expressed a strong interest in strengthening ties and promoting trade exchanges.

“Pujiang and Machakos have much to offer each other. Our economy is vibrant and rich in specialty industries. Let’s build lasting connections between our people and our trades,” said Liu.

He also highlighted that Pujiang and Kenya share profound cultural foundations and stressed the importance of deeper cultural exchanges between the two nations, stating that this would enhance mutual understanding.

Pujiang officials later met with Kenyan entrepreneurs in Nairobi, fostering immediate commercial outcomes. Among them was Felix Owino, whose agribusiness signed a trade deal that enables his firm to export farm produce to China.

“China is leading in many areas—industrialisation, technology, artificial intelligence, you name it. It is ahead in numerous fronts,” remarked Owino.

During the roundtable discussion, John Kilonzo, Machakos CECM for Trade, Industry and Innovation, stated that Kenya stands to benefit significantly from strengthening ties with China, the world’s second-largest economy, especially in its mission to achieve developmental aspirations.

“China is far ahead in terms of technology, and it’s a good time to learn from them. Technology is a key driver of industrial development and economy, as well as a means of creating jobs for our youth who are in urgent need of employment,” he said.

A team from Machakos is expected to travel to China for further engagements with Pujiang leadership on investment and trade opportunities.
