Speaker  Wetang’ula honored as Samburu elder

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula was on Sunday ceremonially inducted as an honorary elder by the Samburu community in Maralal town.

The event, hosted by the Samburu council of elders, took at South Horr, Samburu County where  traditional rites, songs, prayers, and blessings were done in recognizing Speaker Wetang’ula’s continuing commitment to continue fighting for the marginalized communities especially the pastoralists,  good governance, peace-building, and regional development.

During the proceedings, the council conferred upon Speaker Wetang’ula a distinctive beaded club and cow’s horn symbols of leadership, guidance, and elder status in Samburu culture.

Chief Simon Lemboyok of the Samburu Council stated that Wetang’ula’s recognition as an honorary elder was a reflection of his unwavering efforts to promote peace, support education, and foster inter-county cooperation—values that deeply resonate with the Samburu community.

“Wetang’ula’s recognition as an honorary elder reflects his unwavering efforts to promote peace, support education, and foster inter-county cooperation,” said Chief Simon Lemboyok.

In his acceptance speech, the Speaker addressed the common ties between regional communities and Kenya’s national institutions stating:

“To be welcomed as an honorary elder by the Samburu people is both humbling and inspiring. I pledge to uphold your traditions, sustain the values of your tribal governance, and remain a champion for peace and inclusive development,” he said.

Wetang’ula reiterated parliamentary support for regional priorities such as cultural heritage preservation, improved security in pastoralist areas, and educational access.

He pledged to be a steadfast advocate for pastoralist communities and to support initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods in the arid and semi-arid regions.

The Speaker was accompanied by a high-powered delegation that included Samburu Governor Jonathan Lati Lelelit, former Samburu Governor Samuel Lenolkulal, Samburu North MP Hon. Dominic Eli Letipila, Laikipia County Woman Representative Hon. Jane Kagiri, Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda and Lugari MP Hon. Nabii Nabwera, among others.
