CS Duale flags off over 6,400 healthcare interns in nationwide deployment

The Government has officially commissioned the deployment of 6,484 healthcare interns across the country.

Speaking on Monday during the flagging off event at Afya House, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale described the occasion as a bold demonstration of the government’s commitment to reforming the health sector and addressing longstanding staffing challenges.

“Today’s posting of 6,484 interns across the country is not just the fulfilment of that pledge it is a bold demonstration that this government keeps its word.” Said CS Duale.

“To our interns, I say Hongera. This moment is not just a formality—it is a call to service. You are now stepping into the frontlines of our country’s health system. This journey is about duty. It is about nation-building.” He added.

In his address the CS assured that the interns will be posted to accredited facilities for a 12-month structured clinical training program, in line with global standards.

Duale emphasised the government’s focus on not just numbers but quality and professionalism in the health workforce.

Breakdown of Deployed Interns

The number of medical officer intern commissioned is 1,147, dentist intern 87, pharmacist intern 500, BSc clinical officer intern 659.

This as well as 1,993 clinical officer intern (Diploma), 2,098 BSc nursing officer all totalling to 6,484 interns

CS Duale reaffirmed that the deployment aligns with President William Ruto’s vision under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which places healthcare at its core.

He pledged transparent and timely internship deployments, improved workforce planning, and professional development guided by global benchmarks.

The commissioning comes just three months after Duale’s appointment to the Health docket and signals a decisive push to address historic delays and broken promises surrounding medical internship postings in Kenya.
