Aitana Bonmati scored a dramatic winner in extra time to give Spain a 1-0 victory over Germany in the Women’s Euro 2025 semifinal. The world champions will now face England in Sunday’s final in Basel, repeating the 2023 World Cup final where Spain also won 1-0.
The tense match in Zurich seemed headed for penalties until the 113th minute, when Ballon d’Or winner Bonmati surprised German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger with a shot at her near post. Bonmati described the moment.
“When the ball was in, I started running and I saw the bench standing so I celebrated with them. Scoring in a game like this one is super-special. If I can help the team write history, it’s very special.” said Bonmati.
Spain also relied on goalkeeper Cata Coll, who made crucial saves—including a stunning double stop late in normal time against Klara Buhl and Carlotta Wamser—to keep Germany scoreless.
This victory marked Spain’s first-ever win over Germany in women’s football and sent them to their first European Championship final. Bonmati added:
“Today I feel we wrote history again. For the first time we were able to make the final of the women’s Euros and beat Germany, which we hadn’t in the past. We feel proud to be a generation of players to win so many things. Today we can enjoy. Tomorrow we have to start thinking of England.” she added.
If Spain defeats England on Sunday, they will become the first team since Germany 15 years ago to simultaneously hold the World Cup and European Championship titles.
