Music streaming platform Spotify has launched Afrobeats Culture in Motion, a new initiative that highlights the explosive global journey of Afrobeats while celebrating the genre’s cultural impact beyond music.
The project, unveiled through a video released on YouTube, offers fans a deep dive into Afrobeats through stories, visuals, and data. It brings together curated timelines, artist features, and listening insights, showcasing how the once-regional sound has evolved into a worldwide phenomenon.
At the heart of Afrobeats Culture in Motion are four sections:
- Beats in Focus, which explores the cultural aesthetics and themes of the genre.
- Beat by Beat, a timeline capturing defining moments in Afrobeats history, from chart breakthroughs to international collaborations.
- Beats on Screen, highlighting the genre’s influence across visual media, fashion, and storytelling.
- Beats by the Numbers, offering compelling data on Afrobeats’ global spread.
The platform’s latest numbers reveal just how rapidly the sound has travelled.

Since 2020, Afrobeats streaming has surged across new markets, with Indonesia leading at a staggering 4,530% growth, followed by Egypt (2,213%), India (1,650%), the Philippines (1,492%), and Thailand (1,370%), according to Spotify.
The data is in line with the platform’s commitment to celebrating the genre.
Speaking at a celebration in honour of Afrobeats in 2023, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s Managing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, said: “Spotify’s commitment to connecting people with the music they love is at the heart of everything we do. We’re thrilled to continue celebrating Afrobeats’ milestones and reinforce our commitment to the growth of the music ecosystem in Nigeria and across Africa.”
The data released by the platform also notes the rise of subgenres such as Afropop, Afro R&B, Afropiano, Afro soul, and Pop as key drivers of this momentum.
Additionally, artists like Rema, who became the first African featured on a Rolling Stone cover and Burna Boy who won a Grammy for his 2020 album “African Giant are mentioned as some of the more popular artists in countries like Latin America.
“In Latin America, artists like Rema, Ayra Starr, CKay, Burna Boy, and Wizkid are leading the charge, cementing Afrobeats as a truly borderless sound,” the statement said.
The aim of Afrobeats Culture in Motion, according to Spotify, is to not only “track streaming trends but also spotlight the genre’s influence across conversations, visuals, and lived culture to underscore its place as one of the most dynamic global movements in music today”.
