World leaders have hailed Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as a towering statesman, courageous democrat, and unifying Pan-African voice whose impact reached far beyond Kenya’s borders.

In a heartfelt expression of grief and admiration, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan led regional tributes, describing Raila as a skilled leader, Pan-Africanist, and advocate for peace whose influence extended across East Africa and the entire continent.

“This loss is not Kenya’s alone — it is ours as well,” she stated while conveying condolences to President William Ruto, Mama Ida Odinga, and the people of Kenya.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa remembered Raila as “a patriotic and selfless leader” and “a friend and brother” devoted to Kenya’s progress and to “the silencing of the guns on our continent.”

“He remained unwaveringly true to his principles and vision in the face of deep personal sacrifice and obstacles and remained a leader who placed the interests of his country and continent first.” he noted.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also paid tribute, honoring Odinga as a symbol of democracy and solidarity.

“On behalf of the Government of Ethiopia, I extend my sincere condolences on the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga. May he Rest In Peace,” said Abiy.

“I extend my heartfelt Condolences to President William Ruto and the people of Kenya on the passing of former PM Raila Odinga – a towering statesman whose legacy of democracy, justice & public service will endure. Somalia stands in solidarity with Kenya in this moment of grief,” added President Mohamud.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting on his long friendship with Odinga, expressed deep sadness at the loss of his “dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya.” Modi described Raila as a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.

“I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat and our association continued over the years. He had a special affection for India, our culture, values and ancient wisdom. This was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India-Kenya ties,” the Indian Prime Minister remarked.

Former African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat praised Odinga as a fearless leader who significantly influenced Africa’s political landscape.

“A strong advocate for continental integration, he also served as the Continent’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development,” he noted.

Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), described Odinga as one of Africa’s most iconic sons whose life embodied “service and sacrifice.”

“IGAD stands with the people and government of Kenya during this moment of profound sorrow. His legacy will forever echo in the democratic foundations he helped build and in the enduring hope he instilled across our continent,” he stated.

From the Commonwealth, Luis G. Franceschi, Assistant Secretary-General, commended Odinga’s generosity and bravery.

“I will always remember his generosity of spirit at the Marlborough House dialogue, a true act of leadership and love for his country. May his legacy of peace endure,” he said
