Legendary broadcaster and former Presidential State House Master of Ceremonies Sammy Lui has passed away.
Lui, who served for many years as Director of Presidential Events under the late former President Daniel arap Moi, died on Thursday morning, according to his son, Chris.
He was part of a group bringing together veterans and legends who worked for the then Voice of Kenya (VOK), now Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).
“Legendary Broadcaster/ Newsreader (KBC/KTN), Sammy Lui Wang’ondu. Rested this morning, Thursday, 23rd October. Just received a call from his son, Chris”, one of the media icons announced in the group.
The group, known as VOK/KBC Icons, has close to 200 current and former journalists from the state broadcaster.
A pioneer broadcaster at KBC English Service, Lui, known for his distinct voice and unparalleled command of English and articulation, was part of the founding team of anchors at KTN in the 1990s.
One of the major events he took part in was the installation of Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya’s fourth president in 2013.
While details surrounding his death remain undisclosed, Lui had kept a low profile. His last interaction was in 2023 when he joined the VOK/KBC icons to celebrate the 98th birthday of Muthoni Likimani, one of the pioneering broadcasters.
