Kenya and Singapore have moved to deepen their collaboration on climate action following a bilateral meeting between Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and  Forestry, Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, and Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, at COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

The discussions centred on expanding cooperation in key areas such as carbon markets, waste management, youth-focused green job creation and broader environmental initiatives.

Both countries acknowledged the urgent need for practical, scalable climate solutions that can deliver measurable impact.

Minister Fu highlighted Singapore’s growing investments in global climate action.

She noted that the country has signed ten Implementing Agreements, purchased more than 2 million tonnes of carbon credits worth USD 50 million and continues to invest in carbon capture technologies, nature-based solutions, and other innovation-driven projects.

She expressed a strong interest in accelerating Kenya’s project pipeline to unlock new partnership opportunities.

Dr. Pacifica Ogola, Director of Climate Change at Kenya’s Ministry of Environment, identified forest restoration under Article 5 as a priority area for joint investment.

She also underscored Kenya’s ongoing fiscal and technical efforts to build readiness, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors such as waste management.

CS Barasa reaffirmed that climate finance remains a national priority for Kenya. She noted Kenya’s central role as co-facilitator of the climate finance negotiations at COP30 alongside the United Kingdom and commended the dedication of Kenya’s negotiating and technical teams.
