A clear demonstration of political harmony and joint leadership was on display during the groundbreaking of the Kapsabet Kipchoge Keino Stadium, highlighting how cooperation between the county and national government can drive sustainable development.
“Today, we have made a significant step in enhancing sports infrastructure in our county, owing to the groundbreaking for the construction of an ultra-modern Kipchoge Keino Stadium,” said Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, emphasising the project’s transformative potential for local athletes.
The 12-acre facility, presided over by Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Soipan Tuya, will feature a 400-meter mixed-surface track, a standard football pitch, and seating for 10,000 spectators.
The project is designed to provide world-class infrastructure for local athletes, maximising Nandi County’s reputation as a cradle of Kenya’s legendary athletic talent.
“The event was graced by Minister for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, whose support highlighted the national importance of this initiative in transforming sports in our region and the government’s commitment to uplifting talent across the country,” Governor Sang added.
CS Tuya also emphasized the broader vision behind the project, saying, “such a significant investment in sports facilities is aimed at maximizing the abundant athletic talent that Kenya is renowned for, ensuring local athletes have world-class infrastructure to develop and excel,.” she added, “ that it will be implemented under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces within the Ministry of Defence.”
Beyond sports, the event showcased the synergy between leadership tiers.
Deputy Governor Dr Yulita Mitei, area MP Hon. Josses Lelmengit, Tinderet MP Hon. Julius Kibiwot Melly, and Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of Infrastructure at KDF, were all present, signalling strong county support for a project implemented under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces within the Ministry of Defence.
This unified approach ensures that the stadium is built to high standards, stays on schedule, and fulfills both national and local expectations, mirroring the successful coordination seen at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi, where close collaboration between national and local stakeholders is key to delivering a state-of-the-art facility that meets international standards.
Both projects reflect President William Ruto’s deliberate effort to promote integrated planning and execution across counties, while advancing Kenya’s sports infrastructure to first-world standards.
