Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to involve all stakeholders in preparations for next year’s General Election.
Speaking in Othaya Constituency, Nyeri County, Muturi criticised the electoral commission for holding consultations with selected stakeholders while allegedly excluding opposition leaders from the preparations for the August 2027 polls.
Muturi urged the IEBC to adopt an inclusive approach by engaging political parties and other key stakeholders to ensure that the electoral process is transparent, credible and widely accepted.
He said meaningful participation by all political players would help build confidence in the commission and promote a smooth electoral process ahead of the General Election.
Meanwhile, Wiper Patriotic Front and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has raised concerns over the state of the country’s electoral system, warning that no country can hold a credible election without an independent, transparent and trusted electoral commission.
Speaking on Sunday after a delegation from Mt. Kenya comprising members of the business community, professionals and youth representatives, Kalonzo challenged IEBC Chairman Erastus Edung Ethekon to demonstrate that the Commission is independent and not a “Ruto Commission”, saying the reconstruction of IEBC must be transparent, inclusive and guided by the Constitution
Kalonzo also raised concerns over the continued intimidation of journalists and attacks on media freedom, including the reported abduction of journalists.
He called for media owners and practitioners to convene and develop a framework for collectively responding to the growing threats against the media and safeguarding press freedom.
