The First Lady, Mama Rachel Ruto, has officially launched the National School Milk program pilot project at Bondo Kosiemo Primary School in Nyatike Constituency, Migori County.
The pilot project was a collaboration with the Kenya Daily Board and supported by the Meru Central Dairy Cooperative Union.
The project will be piloted in five counties, with the learners receiving a packet of milk twice a week for a whole year.
The First Lady urged Members of Parliament across the country to prioritise children’s education and nutrition by allocating a sufficient budget for a National School Meals Program, including the school meals program.
Livestock PS Jonathan Mueke appreciated the First Lady’s Feed One End Hunger initiative as a critical intervention for children’s nutrition.
The project will boost the dairy industry by increasing the demand for milk and spurring investment in the dairy value chain.
The Managing Director of the Kenya Dairy Board, Margaret Kibogy lauded the pilot program as an opportunity for dairy farmers and processors to contribute to a healthier nation while growing their businesses and improving their livelihoods.
The school milk program seeks to combat malnutrition and foster a culture of dairy consumption, which supports the livelihoods of millions of smallholder dairy farmers across the country.
Other leaders present included Social Services PS Joseph Motari, Migori County MP Mohammed Fatuma Zainab, and Nyatike MP Tom Odege.
