The Ministry of Education has released new guidelines for the selection and placement of learners into Senior School under Kenya’s Competency-Based Education.
The guidelines detail a structured transition for Grade 9 learners to Grade 10, with emphasis on subject pathways, learner interests and academic performance.
Senior School learners will pursue seven subjects, four core and three optional, based on chosen pathways in STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports Science.
Students will select 12 schools, namely nine boarding and three day schools, categorised by subject combinations and location preferences.
Placement will prioritise top-performing learners per gender and track within each sub-county, ensuring merit-based access to boarding schools of choice.

The process is fully automated through the Kenya Education Management Information System, KEMIS, integrating teacher insights, learner strengths, and career exploration results.
Admission letters will be accessible online, and all reporting will be monitored digitally. Replacements will be limited, approved only under specific criteria, and finalised before the official reporting date.
The education ministry has affirmed its commitment to a fair, transparent, and data-driven selection process, with coordination from education officers nationwide to ensure smooth transitions under the CBC framework.
