Lands Principal Secretary Nixon Korir on Thursday presided over the issuance of 2,500 title deeds in Churo/Amaya Ward, Tiaty Constituency in Baringo marking the first time residents of the area have received official land ownership documents.
Speaking at AIC Churo Girls High School, PS Korir said he was tasked by President William Ruto to ensure the residents of the area are given titles as part of the Government’s efforts to rectify historical service delivery gaps.
“I have been sent here by the President. It was a promise he made when he issued title deeds to the residents of Chemolingot,” said the PS.
The PS said the Government will support the school in setting up a new laboratory and fencing the institution to protect the girls.
“I have been informed that the school lacks a laboratory and needs to be fenced. I’ll take back this information and consult my counterpart at Basic Education and we will work together to help this school,” said the PS encouraging the local community to take their girls to school.
Tiaty MP William Kamket, who hosted the event, thanked the Government for addressing the need for land ownership documents after many decades of waiting.
Former Councillor Gideon Kamama, who is also a member of the area land adjudication committee said, “We were left behind and we are the only ones who were not given title deeds. Now we feel like Kenyans.”
Mr Daniel Kapedo, who serves as the chairman of the area land adjudication committee, said, “We were squatting on our own land. We are no longer squatters and we thank President Ruto’s Government.”
Hie sentiments were echoed by Mr Musa Amogon, chairman of the council of elders who said the title deeds symbolised a new beginning for the Pokot community.
“We were treated unfairly by the previous governments. We thank President ruto for bringing us close to the government. Pokots have never seen title deeds before President Ruto came into office,” said the elder.
