The Maasai Mara National Reserve has officially been included in the World Book of Records, UK, under the distinguished title of the “World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration.”

The recognition acknowledges the Reserve’s role in hosting the largest and most dramatic annual land animal migration globally, involving over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras and antelopes traversing the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

In a statement, Rebecca Miano, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, said the global recognition “affirms what we have always known.”

“The Maasai Mara is truly a natural wonder of the world. Hosting over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes as they traverse the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem each year, the Great Migration is not just a breathtaking spectacle, it is a profound symbol of ecological balance, resilience, and the interconnectedness of nature,” she said.

She further commended the Narok County government and its communities for being instrumental in taking care of the reserve.

“I also commend the Narok County Government and the local communities whose dedication and stewardship have been instrumental in preserving the integrity of this globally treasured landscape. Your efforts have ensured that the Maasai Mara remains one of the planet’s most vital wildlife corridors,” she said.

Letter of commendation

In a letter addressed to Mr Patrick Keturet Ole Ntutu, Governor of Narok County, dated 10th July 2025, the World Book of Records confirmed the Reserve’s inclusion.

The letter, signed by President Santosh Shukla, expressed the organisation’s commitment to highlighting the global ecological and environmental significance of such recognitions.

“We are delighted to inform you that the Maasai Mara National Reserve has been officially included in the World Book of Records under the distinguished title,” the letter read.“This remarkable recognition honours the ecological significance of the Maasai Mara and highlights Kenya’s exceptional contribution to wildlife conservation, global biodiversity and sustainable eco-tourism.”

The organisation, known for its global record-keeping across various fields, also stated its intentions to commemorate the occasion with the presentation of an official World Record Certificate at the Reserve.

“We request your kind confirmation for a suitable date and time for this presentation ceremony. Our official representatives would be pleased to coordinate and visit the reserve for this special occasion,” Shukla added.

World Book of Records also underscored its role in promoting global heritage, peace and environmental conservation.

In recognising the Maasai Mara, the body not only celebrates Kenya’s natural heritage but also is enduring efforts in environmental sustainability and wildlife protection.
“We look forward to celebrating this moment of pride and global appreciation together with your esteemed institution.” Santosh Shukla stated.
