The 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations, held on Sunday in Homa Bay County, were not only a solemn commemoration of Kenya’s journey towards self-rule but also a vibrant showcase of the country’s rich cultural and artistic heritage.

This year’s celebrations were themed “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs” and were presided over by President William Ruto, with the President of Slovenia serving as the guest of honour.

As Kenyans began streaming into the venue, the day was underscored by entertainment from the The Maroon Commandos, the Kenya Defence Forces’ iconic army band.

The day’s first artistic performance came from local school children who delivered a choreographed dance routine spelling out “Homa Bay” and “Blue Economy”, a creative nod to the host county’s economic lifeline.

The children also recited a poem paying tribute to the region’s fishermen, who play a crucial role in Homa Bay’s economy and culture.

Among the memorable highlights was a performance by Ohangla artist Orwa Kennedy, who was joined by the energetic Enguba Dance Troupe. Both performances served as an ode to Luo traditions and the broader identity of the Lake Region.

The entertainment lineup was extensive, featuring a mix of emerging and established artists who brought diverse sounds and styles to the stage showcasing Kenya’s diversity. These included: Oticho Jasuba, Tonny Woud Kolwa, Abongo Jakabwana, Freddy Jakadongo, Phoebe Moses Aphy, Kaka Talanta, Janet Oudu, Fred Omondi, Winrose Chepkorir, and Achieng Nyarongo.

The President and the First Lady were also seen dancing along.
