If you missed some of 2024 and 2025’s biggest cinematic releases, Africa’s premier streaming platform, Showmax, has you covered.
From gritty crime dramas to romantic comedies and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, here are some of the movies available to stream this May by genre.
Crime and Chaos
The Bikeriders is a gritty, star-studded crime drama featuring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Jodie Comer. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s iconic photo book, it follows the evolution of a Midwestern motorcycle club into a violent gang. Directed by Cannes winner Jeff Nichols, the film earned an 80% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Epic Action
Gladiator II, Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated sequel, sees Paul Mescal step into the arena as Lucius, with Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Connie Nielsen in supporting roles. With multiple award nominations, it’s a powerful continuation of the Oscar-winning original, also streaming on Showmax.
Terrifying Thrills
Horror fans will love Never Let Go, starring Halle Berry in a chilling psychological survival tale, and A Quiet Place: Day One, led by Kenya’s own Lupita Nyong’o, which earned an 86% critics’ rating. Also spine-tingling is Longlegs, featuring Nicolas Cage as a serial killer in a cult-infused mystery.
Romance & Drama
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy brings Renée Zellweger back in a heartfelt and hilarious continuation of the beloved series available from 12 May.
Real Stories & Historical Drama
Widow Clicquot, streaming from 8 May, tells the tale of the woman behind the champagne empire. For something closer to home, try Die Tragiese Saak van Pamina Vermaak, an award-winning Afrikaans romcom streaming from 11 May.
