Recruitment agencies will now be required to comply with certain regulations for them to merit in recruiting labour from Kenya, State Department for Labour and Skills Development Principal Secretary Shadrack Mwadime has announced.

While on a State visit in Oman, the Principal Secretary said the government has inked collaboration with foreign countries to ensure that only genuine recruitment agencies, both local and international are allowed to operate.

“One of the key areas that we have agreed upon is the need for Oman to establish a visa processing centre in Nairobi. This will ensure we do away with rogue recruitment agencies that bring Kenyans here on tourist visas which do not guarantee employment”, Mwadime stated.

He said in the recent past a number of Kenyans had been lured to leave the country in search of green pastures while in possession of tourist visas.

To curb such an occurrence, the Principal Secretary revealed the partnership also incorporates stringent regulations for private recruitment agencies both in Kenya and other nations.

“We have also had discussions concerning the need for our private recruitment agencies and the recruitment agencies here in Oman that are regulated and registered to work together. That partnership is very key owing to the fact that we have many agencies that purport to have good jobs for Kenyans here in Oman”, he explained.

Mwadime pronounced the government will similarly sign a memorandum of understanding with Oman, which will pave the way for more Kenyans to get employment opportunities in the foreign country.

“We have invited our counterpart from the ministry together with his minister to come to Kenya so that we can be able to sign that memorandum of understanding and create a pathway that will guarantee Kenyans a clear way of accessing jobs here in Oman”, said the Principal Secretary.

He said the pact entails creation of skilled and semi-skilled job opportunities for Kenyan professionals who may wish to work in Oman.
