Govt declares Friday a Public Holiday in honour of Raila

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has declared Friday, October 17, a Public Holiday in honour of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

“In exercise of powers conferred in Section 3 of the Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, October 17 2025, shall be a public holiday in honour of the former Prime Minister Rt. Honourable Raila Odinga,” the gazette notice read.

Raila died on Wednesday while receiving medical treatment in Kochi, India. He collapsed during a morning walk and was taken to Devamatha Hospital, which confirmed he had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Efforts to resuscitate him were, however, unsuccessful.

Following his demise, a delegation comprising government officials and family members led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi was dispatched to coordinate and oversee the process.

Raila’s body is expected to arrive at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 9:30am where it will be received by President William Ruto and the late ODM boss’s close family members.

Thereafter, the body will be taken to Lee Funeral Home and later to Parliament Buildings, where it will lie in state to allow for public viewing from midday until 5 pm when it will be returned to Lee Funeral Home.

On Friday, a daylong memorial Service will take place at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, after which the body will be moved to Raila’s Karen home for an overnight Stay.

On Saturday morning, the body will be flown to Kisumu for public viewing between 9 am and3pm and then taken by road for an overnight stay at his Bondo home for the night.

The late former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, will later be laid to rest at his Bondo home on Sunday, 19 October.
